So it’s rare that we listen to Skepta voluntarily, that’s not to say he isn’t a great artist in his own right. He’s clearly hugely successful, a veteran in the UK grime scene even managing to expand overseas in recent years with comparable success in the US. Still, his music isn’t really our go too on a day to day basis so you’re probably wondering why on earth we are blogging about him. Well earlier this year Skepta released another song ‘Man’ from his new album Konnichiwa and when we heard it on the radio we couldn’t help but notice a slight similarity to something we had heard before. Little test for you all, before reading on listen to the song below and see if you can spot part of the track that you recognise. Don’t be disheartened if you can’t though this is a difficult one.
So after much deliberation and rattling around my brain it clicked, how could I be so blind? Maybe because I didn’t think that in a million years Skepta would have sampled a track from one of my favourite rock bands. That’s right Skepta used a snippet of a song from one of my fav rock bands in ‘Man’, now you have a little more info care to go back and try your luck again?
I’m sure a larger proportion of you will have clicked by now but for those of you that are still struggling to get that brain into gear on this Monday morning I’ll clear the air. It can be heard straight from the offset, that eerie guitar twang that sets the tone of the song is infact a riff sampled from Queens of The Stoneage’s ‘Regular John’. I know we couldn’t believe it either! Does this mean Skepta is a Queens of The Stoneage fan? Or maybe even on texting terms with Josh Homme? Long shot, the liklehood is that one of the albums producers heard the song in passing and thought it would fit well on one of Skepta’s upcoming songs. Either way it’s pretty cool. Regular John is below so you can make the comparison yourselves:
