SWEARS, a four piece band from Middlesbrough, break their music industry virginity today with their debut single “Faith In The Nation” premiering here with TRW. Some of you savvy underground music listeners with a keen eye for talent may have caught wind of them in some form already, but for most of us this our first sign of contact. Their influences stem from some of the deepest and darkest crevices of rock music’s bubbling cauldron with hints of punk, grunge, doom and pop. Quite an alluring mix one might think? Sounds as if it’d be pure chaos to blend these sub-styles into tangible song format without scaring the fur off your next door neighbour’s cat! But get that salt and pepper at the ready I’ll be dining on my finest fedora hat tonight!

It’s well thought out and cleverly executed we have some faint tones of an early 90’s Green Day breaking through the surface with those raw chord progressions and punky messages. Drawing influence from the current social and political climates across the globe this song takes a direct approach to addressing the issues occurring in our glorious nation. Classic punk execution here, driving down the door of 10 Downing Street with a fuck off sledge hammer asking for answers. It enters with some punchy bassline and anthemic clapping before the cavalry arrive and overdriven guitar takes over. “I’m like a missionary losing my faith in the nation” rings through and true as SWEARS take the words right off the tips of our tainted tounges. There’s a fluid light hearted tone throughout, it’s not aggressive in the slightest. Sure, they can still drum up an almighty riot with this track, but have shown they can do it in the most civil and pleasant of manners. You don’t need screeching guitar and filthy tones to be heard in punk. This is where their pop-esque influences surface. You can feel it in the chanty aspects of the lyrics and sing-a-long style to the chorus.
What’s that we hear….. has the mod-father himself sprinkled some wise and all-knowing fairy dust on the Middlesborough based lads? As we creep into the bridge section of this track the instruments take a brief moment of confinement and solidarity as the vocals step up to centre stage. Here’s the moment where they deliver the message and it really hits home. We build back up and drop into the final few corkscrews, “That’s what I call entertainment, that’s what all the moneys for”. Is this homage to The Jam’s “That’s Entertainment”? Okay, a very loose comparison but there’s notes of this raw 80’s punk bravado about SWEARS and it’s great!

Let’s meet the band….. we have Joel Clayton, Cypriot brothers George and Stephanos Louca and Craig Hughes. Every member of the band has been gigging and touring for a number of years and after a lot of spontaneous jamming on stage and collaborating in numerous side projects, realised how fun it was playing music together and decided to make it Facebook official. “Our influences vary really but i think we all agree on the Rush Hour trilogy as being our biggest influence, in particular Rush Hour 2”. There you have it boys and gals SWEARS from Middlesborugh! Get to know cos we’re sure it’ll be a name you’ll all be starting to hear a lot more about in the coming months and years. We’ve been reliably informed that they have an EP on the way very soon so keep an eye out for that, we’ll be bringing it to you fresh from the packet.
