GREENDAY: NEW TRACK & ALBUM RELEASE

Things have been unsettlingly quiet over in camp Green Day since their last release back in 2012. Their trilogy of albums ‘¡Uno!’, ‘¡Dos!, ‘¡Tré!’ went down like a sack of wet old shit, so we’re not surprised they went into hiding.. Apologies to anyone that liked the records, but seriously get your ears/ head checked! However after residing in the shadows, teetering on the edge of rock and roll’s graveyard for the past four years they seem to have shown slight glimmer of life. You can put your defibrillator back in the under stairs cupboard, they aren’t flat lining just yet!
Not much is really know yet; there hasn’t been a grand build up or elaborate PR agenda surrounding the new record. It will however be released on October 7th 2016 and has been titled ‘Revolution Radio’. The hallowing question that looms over any new album release is of course ‘what’s it going to sound like?’, ‘what direction are the band moving in?’. Green Day probed into such a broad array of styles across their expansive discography that it makes it nearly impossible to pinpoint what direction they will move in next. We would hope back towards their early 90’s ‘glory years’ with a raw, punky and in your face sound. That material has always been most popular with fans and in some ways the style that gave them their identity. Fortunately it seems our desires may become reality, several fingers are pointing towards that direction. They encompassed an array of old material in the handful of shows they played last year, suggesting that they’re in a reflective mood maybe even nostalgic some would argue? To add to this very speculative notion they were recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, a grand milestone in their decorated careers. Surely a time to pause, appreciate and look back on the journey they’ve made so far. More importantly acknowledge where it all began and remind themselves of their catalyst to fame.
‘Bang Bang’ is probably the strongest sign yet. It’s raw, fast, aggressive, visceral and a great indication that were about to be transported back in time with this record. I was released last month on 11th August and is the first single from the new album. Preliminary listening would suggest it’s out with the slow tracks and back in with the energetic adolescence. Billie Joe Armstrong recently spoke in an interview with Rolling Stone where he elucidated the back story of their new song, “it’s about the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media". Well okay do tell more….. "there's this sort of rage happening, but it's also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance. To me, that is so twisted. To get into the brain of someone like that was freaky. It freaked me out. After I wrote it, all I wanted to do was get that out of my brain because it just freaked me out.". Other matters will be explored across the album aswell with the presidential election and even legal drug addiction. "These songs were written before this presidential election. I use a lot of metaphor, and I blow things out, as any good punk rocker should. And it was interesting to see how songs like ‘Bang Bang’ and ‘Say Goodbye’ went from metaphor to literal, and that's the part that was tripping me out. It was almost, kind of like, predicting the future, in a way." These are tender subjects to dive into but that’s what punk music is meant to be like right? Going where no other genre is willing to go, addressing issues that otherwise are left unspoken, being the voice for the people.
