SO…….. that dreary, stereotypical bastard British weather has decided to fuck off for a bit. We all crawled out of our shaded holes this weekend and into our gardens to make the most of this minor glimmer of sunlight. The chance to get out and use these poorly maintained patches of hopeful nature come only few and far between in this rainy nation, so it’s vital that we make every second count. Now whilst you’re out in this alien environment sitting in your, B&Q purchased, reclining sun lounger (still with label on) there are but a few accompaniments that can make this situation crawl ever so closer to the feeling of falsified paradise. That is, of course, an ice cold beer! Be quick though it’s bound to get warm and undrinkable in this scorching April sunshine! The second has to be some beautiful summer anthems. Now, let’s not lie, you probably have a playlist in the sidelines ready and waiting to be called up by the gaffer to make its debut appearance for the club. This’ll be full of some of the essential summer classics like The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Libertines you know, that old chestnut. There’s always a void though, each year you feel the need to add something fresh to this playlist. Some new bands, new sounds and something to latch onto for the next few months. It needs to have the quality to remind you of the ‘good times’, almost nostalgic, so you can sit and stare out of your window in the rainy months of June, July and August wishing it was that April bank holiday weekend again! We have the perfect addition for you and they’re called ‘BARE TRAPS’.
"They maintain the rigour and strength of previous releases but delve into a world of ambient, tropical indie pop."
This London based band are still in the relatively youthful stages of their musical adventure so far having only released five tracks to date. Striving to find the sound they’re looking to achieve with Bare Traps they stumbled into their latest single “All In You”. This release see’s the band maintain the rigour and strength of previous releases but delve into a world of ambient, tropical indie pop. Enter with a bed of glittery/ atmospheric synth before a delightful little summer riff bounces in like a smiling puppy wielding a mouthful of daffodils. Cue the soulful narrative that eases you into ‘story-time’. This song has ulterior motives it’s not just there to accompany your beautiful summer stroll it has a message of young love blossoming and what better way for it to be delivered. The track guides you through what feels like your typical British summer day. It starts slow as if waking up from a hazy dream before building some substance around its main riff which is essentially the ‘meat and two veg’ of your day before dropping the tempo into a lovely melodic section so the pace can be picked back up with a moment of solidarity from the lead guitar. It then blasts into some contrastingly powerful chords to end the day of sunshine and bring us into the warm summers evening. It’s a very clever, intricately written track; Bare Traps have left no rock unturned and no avenue unexplored. They create a real essence of joy and warmth from the word go, something that is easily portrayed in music but very hard to get right. When asked about the ‘All In You’ the band said that "Of all the songs we've written so far, we feel that ‘All in You’ manages to embody the essence of Bare Traps the best. It's our attempt to imagine the sound of sunshine. As a band, we're all about good vibes, and this song is about sonically replicating those incredible feelings of warmth you experience when you first encounter someone that takes your breath away".
Bare Traps play Basement Bar, Chelmsford on Friday so if you’re free and want some great live music to get you in that sunny Bank Holiday mood look no further.
